Tactical Equipment » FastRope

API utilizes state-of-the-art material sciences and fluid mechanics
analysis to provide solutions to various problems associated with the armed forces' protective and tactical equipment.
As an example, the U.S. Military's Legacy Fast Ropes were found to be too flexible to withstand the
significant rotor wash generated by the newly introduced CV-22
Osprey. By employing Computational Fluid Dynamic (CFD) studies
of the CV-22 rotor wash and the legacy rope in-flight, API was able
to identify deficiencies and provide the requisite improvements.
Refined by studies of rope aerodynamics, a mathematical rope
model was constructed and computationally flown. Finite
Element (FE) analysis and Matlab were used to determine the
necessary damping coefficient of the rope subject to the rotor
wash.
By utilizing the results obtained from this analysis combined with
advanced material processes, API was able to develope the next
generation fast rope for use beneath the CV-22 as well as any air
delivery platform.
